Big news for tonight's training session. Arav Shetty will be leading the session, made possible by Sumit Panda. This is genuinely rare. Most junior cricketers will never get the chance to be coached by a current professional, and tonight our kids have exactly that.
Arav is one of our own. He came through the UCC junior setup just like every player on this squad, U11, U13, U15, and then into senior cricket for Urmston on weekends. A proper UCC cricketer through and through.
His talent was clear from early on. After impressing through to the first team, he moved to a Premier Division side last season and did well enough to earn a two-year contract with Lancashire CCC at the start of this year. He has been playing first-class County Championship, List A and T20 cricket as an allrounder.
There is a small footnote. A few weeks ago, fielding in the slips off Jimmy Anderson's bowling (yes, that Jimmy Anderson), Arav took a nasty blow to his hand and suffered a break. Metal plate, a few screws, and a lot of determination later, he is nearly back to full fitness and targeting a return for the Roses match in early July.
If he keeps going the way he is, the next step is international cricket. That is not an exaggeration.
Tonight, our young cricketers get to train with a homegrown Urmston player who is now a professional cricketer for Lancashire. Doesn't get much better than that.
Thanks to Sumit Panda, and Sumeet Ricky Mandal for highlighting this session and making it all happen.
