The cricket was good this week. The weather is about to get even better. With a heatwave forecast to sweep across the north-west in the days ahead, there has rarely been a better time to be a cricket club. Urmston had fourteen fixtures across seven days, from a breathless T20 Cup win decided by a single wicket to a century from Freddie Cartwright and a pair of results that came down to the very last run. Here is how the week unfolded.

Tuesday 16 June

1st XI v Brooklands CC, 1st XI | T20 League | The UCG

Result: Brooklands won

Urmston 118 all out (20 overs) | Brooklands 229-2 (20 overs)

Urmston won the toss and chose to bat, but the T20 proved a tough evening for the first team. Freddie Cartwright top-scored with 28, supported by George Holmes (21) and Irfan Naseri (20), but the total of 118 was always going to ask questions of the bowling attack.

Brooklands answered them emphatically. Kevin Carroll was imperious, anchoring a commanding reply that gave the visitors a 111-run win. Irfan Naseri provided the only flashes of resistance with the ball, taking both Urmston wickets to fall.

2nd XI v Timperley CC, 3rd XI | Cheshire County Cricket League Cup | Timperley Sports Club

Result: Urmston won by 1 wicket

Timperley 143-8 (20 overs) | Urmston 144-9 (19.1 overs)

While the first team was battling at the UCG, the second XI were producing something rather special over at Timperley. Sent in to field after Urmston won the toss, the bowlers gave the batting side every chance.

Adi Manesh was the standout with the ball, claiming three wickets to restrict Timperley to 143-8. When Urmston came to chase, the runs came in fits and starts. Craig Horner led with 27, with David Stubbs (20) and Will Derby (19) providing vital middle-order contributions.

It went to the wire. With Urmston needing every run, they got over the line with 5 balls to spare but only one wicket remaining. A victory by the smallest possible margin, and every bit as nerve-shredding as the scorecard suggests.

Wednesday 17 June

Over 40s v Mobberley CC, Over 40s | Cheshire County Cricket League, Over 40s Division 3 | The UCG

Result: Urmston won

Urmston 212-3 (20 overs) | Mobberley 138-8 (17.3 overs)

The Over 40s put in one of the performances of the week, posting a commanding 212-3 at the UCG and then defending it with authority. Ankush Dadhwal and David Stubbs both retired not out as the runs flowed, with Sumit Panda (35) adding real muscle in the middle overs alongside a composed 19 from Shahzad Ahmed before his dismissal.

With 213 to chase, Mobberley were never in the hunt. Daniel Grimshaw and Ritesh Shetty were the pick of the Urmston bowlers as the visitors were bowled out for 138 with 2.3 overs remaining.

Thursday 18 June

Oulton Park CC, 1st XI v Urmston CC, 1st XI | T20 League | Oulton Park CC

Result: Urmston won by 20 runs

Urmston 172-7 (20 overs) | Oulton Park 152-8 (20 overs)

Twenty-four hours after the T20 defeat to Brooklands, the first team bounced back in style. Urmston won the toss and batted, and the top order delivered. Umar Munawar led the way with a fine 63, James Bashford helped with a captains 50, with Adi Manesh and Freddie Cartwright scoring 16 & 13 respectably, as Urmston built a total of 172-7.

Oulton Park's reply threatened to get close. Their opener Andrew Duffy made 37 and kept the hosts in the contest. But James Bashford was outstanding with the ball, taking three wickets to help reduce Oulton Park to 152-8. Urmston held on for a 20-run victory.

Urmston CC, Under 12s v South West Manchester CC, Under 12s | South Manchester Junior Cricket League, Under 13 Division 4 | The UCG

Result: Urmston won by 6 wickets

Urmston 64-4 (14.1 overs) | South West Manchester 63-7 (20 overs)

Another great finish for the Under 12s. Urmston won the toss and batted, with Jarvis Jenkins top-scoring on 16 and Kushal Gondi adding 24. The total of 64 looked vulnerable at times as South West Manchester pushed hard in their 20 overs, but they fell short, finishing on 63-7. A result that was well deserved for the Urmston under 13's

Friday 19 June

Urmston CC, Under 13s v Hale Barns CC, Under 13s | South Manchester Junior Cricket League | The UCG

Result: Urmston won by 101 runs

Urmston 179-1 (20 overs) | Hale Barns 78-9 (20 overs)

This was an afternoon of excellence from the Under 13s. Hale Barns won the toss and elected to field, but they had no answer to an Urmston batting display that was as cohesive as it was clinical.

The top order fired on all cylinders, with Zayn Omair (33), Mustafa Raza (32), and Veyahn Poluri (31) all contributing significantly as Urmston posted 179-1 from their 20 overs. Hale Barns were then bowled out for 78, with Emma Arnold taking three wickets in a fine spell.

A 101-run win, and a performance to be proud of.

Saturday 20 June

Urmston CC, 1st XI v Maritime CC, 1st XI | Cheshire County Cricket League, 1st XI Division 1 | The UCG

Result: Maritime won by 7 wickets

Urmston 207 all out (50 overs) | Maritime 209-3 (25.2 overs)

It was a day to forget for the first team. Urmston won the toss and elected to bat, and at first the innings had real promise. Freddie Cartwright was the pick of the batters, before falling to Gavasker Kanthiraj, who was devastating with the ball.

Irfan Naseri & Istiqlal Hanif provided vital support with 47 & 28 respectedly, and on his senior 50 over debut, George Holmes scored a welcome 21.

It was a respectable total on paper, but Maritime had other ideas. They tore into the chase and reached 209-3 in just 25.2 overs, winning by seven wickets. Kanthiraj's five-wicket haul was the difference.

Heaton Mersey CC, 2nd XI v Urmston CC, 2nd XI | Cheshire County Cricket League, 2nd XI Division 2 | Heatons Sports Club

Result: Urmston won

Urmston 228 all out (49.1 overs) | Heaton Mersey 220 all out (49.0 overs)

A tight, absorbing contest that Urmston edged in the final overs. The second XI won the toss and chose to bat, Irfanullah Khan scored an impressive 85, and Nikhil George scoring a half century. Pyush Anand topped up the score with 31, and Craig Horner scored 15.

Heaton Mersey gave the total genuine respect, and the match went deep into the final overs before Urmston confirmed their win. Ritesh Shetty took three wickets with the ball and Ishaan Devaramani chipped in with two.

Urmston CC, 3rd XI v Brooklands CC, 3rd XI | Cheshire Cricket League, Division B East 2026 | New Ground

Result: Brooklands won by 2 wickets

Urmston 207 all out (38.2 overs) | Brooklands 228-8 (40 overs)

Brooklands won the toss and elected to bat in this one. Urmston restricted them well initially, but the visitors posted 228-8 from their 40 overs. Karthik Nadimpalli was excellent with the ball, taking four wickets in a disciplined spell.

Chasing 229, Urmston gave themselves a genuine opportunity. Omar Mohammed (41), Yuvaraj Mohan (28) and Vignesh Parameswari (27) all contributed, and the innings held together well deep into the reply. But Brooklands held their nerve, winning by two wickets with the match going to the final overs.

Sunday 21 June

Bredbury St Marks CC, 3rd XI v Urmston CC, 4th XI | Cheshire County Cricket League, 3rd XI Division 2 | Bredbury St Marks CC

Result: Bredbury St Marks won by 3 wickets

Bredbury 116-7 (34.4 overs) | Urmston 115 all out (38.4 overs)

Two matches on the same day decided by a single run. This was heartbreaking for the fourth team. Bredbury St Marks won the toss and batted, and their number three Anney Patel compiled a fine 68 that anchored a total of 116-7.

Urmston would have fancied their chances chasing 117. George Stead batted beautifully for 39, and Karthik Nadimpalli (21), Ebrahim Fulat (17) and Ankush Dadhwal (17) all gave themselves starts. But wickets fell at crucial moments, and the fourth XI were bowled out for 115, one run short.

Isadora Barton, Nicholas Crowther, Ebrahim Fulat and Adeen Raza all contributed with the ball, but it was not our day.

Urmston CC, Sunday 5th XI v Prestbury CC, 3rd XI | Cheshire County Cricket League, 3rd XI Division 4 | The UCG

Result: Prestbury won by 27 runs

Prestbury 189-9 (40 overs) | Urmston 162-4 (40 overs)

Prestbury won the toss and elected to bat, posting 189-9 from their 40 overs. Andre Pepa was the pick of the Urmston bowlers, taking four wickets, with Joshua Vas adding two more.

Urmston's reply was steady rather than spectacular. Bilaal Hanif batted with considerable resolve, reaching 81 not out and giving the chase genuine hope. But with Urmston finishing on 162-4, the target of 190 proved just beyond us. Prestbury won by 27 runs.

Whalley Range CC, Under 11s v Urmston CC, Under 11s | South Manchester Junior Cricket League, Under 11 Division 1 | Whalley Range CC

Result: Whalley Range won by 5 runs

Whalley Range 103-8 (20 overs) | Urmston 98-5 (20 overs)

A narrow defeat for the Under 11s, who came close but could not quite get there. Whalley Range won the toss and batted, making 103-8. Urmston's bowlers were competitive throughout: Zayn Omair Alam turned in a superb spell, taking one wicket from two overs that included a maiden, while Zak Sattar took two wickets. Veyahn Poluri also chipped in.

Chasing 104, Urmston made a genuine fist of it. Bhavnoor Singh and Muhammad Goga both scored 21, with Ruben Pickering and Zayn Omair Alam each contributing 11. But the batting side fell 5 runs short, finishing on 98-5. A performance that showed plenty of promise even in defeat.

Monday 22 June

Urmston CC, Under 15s v Lindow CC, Under 15s Lightning | South Manchester Junior Cricket League, Under 15 Division 1 | The UCG

Result: Lindow won by 7 wickets

Urmston 118-4 (20 overs) | Lindow 120-3 (18 overs)

The Under 15s could not quite defend their total as Lindow's batters proved too strong on the night. Urmston won the toss and elected to bat, posting 118-4 from their 20 overs. Solomon Hussain made 24, Nadal Shinod contributed 22 and Charlie Locker batted well for 21. Sunny Ghosh added 16.

Lindow's Thomas Clarke retired not out on 44 and Harris Sardar reached 44, with the visitors reaching their target in 18 overs with 7 wickets in hand. Arthur Mitten, Joshua Vas and Mustafa Raza each took one wicket in Urmston's bowling effort.
