It was a weekend that tested the character of Urmston Cricket Club's sides across the board, with defeats for the majority of our teams, but moments of real brightness to carry us forward.

1st XI 122-9 vs Widnes CC 128-5 Cheshire County League Division 1 | Defeat

The first team made the trip to face Widnes CC in the top flight, posting 122-9 from their innings. Widnes reached their revised target of 118 from 39 overs, finishing on 128-5 to take the points. A tough afternoon, but the league campaign continues.

2nd XI 175-9 vs Winnington Park CC 235-7 Cheshire County League Division 2 | Defeat

The second team faced a strong Winnington Park side and came up short, despite some encouraging individual performances. Captain Duncan Hood reflected honestly on the day.

"Disappointing weekend for the second team, but we have to take the positives where we can."

Jake McGinley bowled with real purpose, taking three wickets and making his presence felt around the group. George Holmes also contributed with the ball on debut, and Hood was full of praise for the youngster's development. "He's learning every weekend and is on track to develop well this year."

Craig Wilson was again economical and accurate with the ball, and Hood sees plenty of promise ahead. Chris Turner continued to impress with 47 not out, another name to keep an eye on as the season develops.

"We still need to find something extra," Hood admitted, "but I remain positive and the team is still upbeat about getting on a roll soon."

3rd XI 68-3 vs Lindow CC Match Abandoned

The third team were well placed when the weather intervened against Lindow CC, sitting on 68-3 with 23 overs still in hand. Captain Pyush Anand was understandably frustrated.

"Shame that the game was called off, we were in a good position. The pitch was very difficult; anything close to 160-170 would have been a challenging total."

Sol and Ishaan were in fine touch before the abandonment, putting on a partnership of 50 runs that had set the platform for something special. Omair and Vignesh were still at the crease when the decision was made.

"We go again next week," said Anand. A result that never was, but a performance that promised plenty.

4th XI 133 vs Christleton CC 174 Defeat

The fourth team were beaten by Christleton CC, who posted 174 in reply to Urmston's 133. A difficult afternoon, but another week of competitive cricket under the belt.

Sunday 5s 138 vs Cheadle CC 139 Defeat by 4 wickets.

If ever a result deserved a longer look, it was this one. The Sunday 5s posted 138-8 but couldn't defend it, with Cheadle reaching their target for the loss of 6 wickets. This is a match that will live long in the memory.

Captain David Stubbs was gracious in defeat. "We couldn't protect our total in the end, credit to Cheadle."

But the day belonged in no small part to Sol Hussain, who marked his appearance with a magnificent 54 not out, his first senior half-century, and a knock that showed exactly why the future at Urmston is in such good hands.

There was also a moment of real joy for the Stubbs family. Young Finn Stubbs took a wonderful wicket and celebrated it with his dad, Sunday 5s captain David Stubbs, right there on the field. That is what community cricket looks like.

Joe Shannon, an Under 13 making his senior debut, also caught the eye, contributing runs, a wicket, and a catch in a performance well beyond his years.

Under 13s 65-4 vs Wythenshawe CC 63-8 South Manchester Junior Cricket League | WIN

The Under 13s provided the result of the weekend, beating Wythenshawe CC in a tight contest. Urmston posted 65-4 from their 20 overs and restricted Wythenshawe to 63-8 in reply. A brilliant team effort, well done to all involved.

Under 15s 146 vs Timperley Tigers 168 Defeat

The Under 15s pushed Timperley Tigers hard before coming up short, with Timperley posting 168 in reply to Urmston's 146. There is plenty to build on from this one.

A challenging weekend overall, but the spirit across all our sides remains strong. From Finn and his dad celebrating a wicket together, to Sol's brilliant half-century, to the Under 13s grinding out a win — there is more than enough here to remind us why we love this club.
