Six fixtures across the weekend produced contrasting fortunes, rain frustrations, and at least one batting performance that will be spoken about at this club for a very long time.

1st XI | Alvanley CC vs Urmston CC | Abandoned

Cheshire County Cricket League — Division 1

Away at Alvanley, James Bashford's side were outstanding with the ball. Archie Mitten opened the attack and claimed two important early wickets. Istiqlal Hanif kept things tight through a controlled spell of 7.3 overs, while David Dempster chipped in with a wicket and James Bashford took two. Uzzair Shah was the most penetrating of all, taking three wickets from just three overs as Alvanley were restricted to 173 for 9.

Urmston never had the chance to bat. The rain came and did not relent. Both sides shared six points.

2nd XI | Urmston CC vs Oakmere CC 2nd XI | Oakmere CC Won

Cheshire County Cricket League - Division 2

Urmston's second team compiled a substantial 232 for 7 from their full fifty overs at the UCG. Tom Pratt made 39 to anchor the early innings before Chris Turner and Irfanullah Khan took control of the middle overs. Turner finished with 63 and Khan contributed a fine 73, the pair putting the match firmly in Urmston's favour.

Rain intervened at the interval, and a Duckworth-Lewis revision set Oakmere a target of 101 from 22 overs. It proved too generous. David Purcell batted brilliantly for an unbeaten 72 from 51 balls, and Oakmere reached 116 for 2 with ease. Craig Wilson was the pick of Urmston's bowling with two wickets, but the revised target had swung the contest decisively. Urmston took four points.

3rd XI | Urmston CC vs North East Cheshire CC 3rd XI | Abandoned

Cheshire Cricket League - Division B East

There are afternoons at a cricket club that become folklore. Saturday at Urmston's second ground was one of them.

The third XI posted 366 for 7 from their 40 overs. Two innings defined it. Captain Pyush Anand struck 100 from 67 balls, an innings of genuine authority - 14 fours and four sixes - that set the platform for what followed. Then Omar Mohammed took over. His 175 from 115 balls, studded with 20 fours and 10 sixes, was an exhibition of hitting that would grace any standard of cricket. Ankush Dadhwal added a brisk 22 not out and Vignesh Parameswaran contributed 25.

North East Cheshire did not face a delivery. The rain arrived and points were shared at six apiece.

Sunday 17 May

4th XI | Urmston CC vs Stockport Trinity CC 3rd XI | Stockport Trinity Won

Cheshire County Cricket League - 3rd XI Division 2

Urmston elected to field first at the UCG. George Holmes and Karthik Rengaraj each took two wickets, with two catches for George Holmes, and the attack worked hard throughout, but Imran Khan batted through the entire innings for an unbeaten 85 to anchor Stockport Trinity's total of 167 for 7 from 40 overs.

A Duckworth-Lewis revision set Urmston 147 from 32 overs. Charlie Locker made 23 and Jake McGinley contributed 20, but Urmston could not sustain the required rate and finished on 122 for 7, falling 25 runs short. Stockport Trinity took 20 points; Urmston earned five.

Sunday 5th XI | Cheadle Hulme Ladybridge CC vs Urmston CC Sunday 5th XI | Cheadle Hulme Ladybridge Won

Cheshire County Cricket League - 3rd XI Division 4

On a slow wicket with a heavy outfield, David Stubbs led Urmston to 175 for 9 from 40 overs. The captain batted superbly, making 96 from 75 balls - 14 fours and four sixes - before being caught on the boundary attempting the shot that would have brought up a century in the grandest possible style.

Cody Grindley was excellent with the ball, taking four wickets to keep the contest alive. But Cheadle Hulme Ladybridge chased the target down inside 35.1 overs, finishing on 176 for 5. Five points for Urmston on the road.

Under 11s | Whalley Range CC Under 11 Eagles vs Urmston CC Under 11s | Abandoned

South Manchester Junior Cricket League - Under 11 Zone 2

The young side made a fine statement with the bat on Sunday morning, posting 113 for 3 from 17 overs at Whalley Range. Captain Veyahn Poluri and Zayn Omair Alam both retired on 30, always an encouraging sign at junior level. Casper Barton made 16 before being caught, and Bhavnoor Singh batted through to the close unbeaten.

Whalley Range had not faced a delivery when the match was abandoned and points were shared. A bright performance from Urmston's next generation, even if the result column does not fully reflect it.

In Their Own Words

James Bashford | 1st XI Captain

"Strong performance from the bowlers put us in a winning position, with Alvanley struggling to 173 for 9 before the rain came and sadly did not abate, denying us the opportunity of a chase. Special note to Archie Mitten - one of Urmston's own, grown up through the pathway - opening the bowling for the first XI in the league for the first time and taking two important early wickets, getting us right into the game."

Pyush Anand | 3rd XI Captain

Sheetal Sethi

Pyush reflected warmly on a remarkable team performance. The innings from Omar Mohammed was something special in itself - but there was a quiet subplot that made it even more meaningful. As Omar's total climbed, Pyush found himself privately hoping his

teammate might surpass 201: An amazing batting knock, by Pyush's own father (Sheetal Sethi seen in the picture). There was no announcement, no fanfare. Just a son, proud of that family legacy, silently willing a teammate on.

The family record held - but the spirit behind the wish says everything about the kind of place Urmston Cricket Club is.

David Stubbs | Sunday 5th XI Captain

"Sunday 5's put on a respectable total of 175 in their 40 overs, on a slow wicket and outfield - the captain getting 96, caught on the rope going for a century in style. Cheadle Hulme Ladybridge chased this down with a handful of overs to spare, with star bowler Cody Grindley taking four wickets."
