James Bashford - 1st XI Captain

Stockport Georgians V Urmston CC 1st XI

"Bittersweet, Competitive, Promising" | James Bashford on the Season Opener

James Bashford doesn't do excuses. But he does do honesty, and after Urmston CC's 1st XI fell 19 runs short against Stockport Georgians on Saturday, there was plenty worth saying.

Stockport posted 263/8 from their 50 overs. Urmston, having won the toss and elected to field, set about their chase with intent. They reached 244 all out in 48.4 overs. Close, but not close enough.

"A couple of run outs in our chase probably just turned the tide against us," said Bashford.

There were individual bright spots. Ben Percival and Irfan Naseri both batted with distinction, while Freddie produced an excellent performance with the gloves, claiming three catches behind the stumps.

But it was Bashford's wider assessment that carried the most weight.

"The performance was a bit of a curate's egg. Given some of the mistakes we made in the field, and the relatively poor bowling performance, to come as close as we did in that chase tells me our batting is going to be a real strength this season."

The bowling, he feels, can be forgiven for now. Wet conditions and a touch of first-match rust are factors he's prepared to account for. What he's less prepared to overlook are the fielding standards, and the squad knows it.

"I want the team to focus on improving the standards in the field. The bowlers I'm confident will get it right next week."

Week one done. Lessons learned. Urmston's first team will be back. 🏏

Pyush Anand - 3rd XI Captain

Urmston 3rd XI v Holmes Chapel

"Onwards and Upwards" | Pyush Anand on the 3s' Season Opener

There are ways to start a season. And then there's what Urmston CC's 3rd XI did on Saturday.

Holmes Chapel were last season's table-toppers. Urmston's 3s were opening their campaign. Nobody told the 3s to be nervous about it.

Winning the toss and electing to bowl, Pyush Anand's side set the tone immediately. Irfan S was outstanding on debut, taking three wickets with the kind of authority that made it feel anything but a first appearance. The captain himself chipped in with two, as did Jake, while the unsung work of George H and Solomon H proved just as important, two bowlers who sacrificed glamour for discipline and kept the dot balls coming relentlessly. Holmes Chapel were restricted to 113/8. George S, making his senior debut behind the stumps, was sharp, vocal, and assured throughout.

Then came the chase. And for a moment, things got interesting.

Three wickets down for six runs is not how anyone draws it up. But Irfan S, fresh from his bowling heroics, and Vignesh P had no interest in panic. The pair built a partnership of composure and conviction, soaking up the pressure, rotating the strike, and gradually turning the game back in Urmston's favour. The target of 114 was overhauled in 29.3 overs, 116/7, won by three wickets.

The captain was honest about where improvement is still needed. The fielding, he acknowledged, has lessons to learn as the season progresses. But on a day that demanded grit with the bat and precision with the ball, his side delivered both when it mattered.

"A massive win built on individual brilliance and a never say die batting partnership," said Anand. "Onwards and upwards."

Week one. Three points dropped in the first team. Sixteen earned in the thirds. The season is alive. 🏏
