Dave Stubbs - Captain of the 5th XI V Macclesfield

"We Start the League Season on a High" | David Stubbs on the 5s' Win Over Macclesfield

David Stubbs has been saying it all pre-season. The juniors are coming. On Sunday against Macclesfield, they arrived.

The Sunday 5s posted 184/7 from their 40 overs, a total built almost entirely by Urmston's U14 and U15 players, who dominated the batting innings from the outset. It was the kind of performance that makes a captain's pre-season promises feel like understatements.

Then came the defence. Macclesfield needed 185 to win. They never got close. Bowled out for 154, 30 runs adrift, with the juniors again leading the way, taking the bulk of the wickets as the opposition were dismissed inside their allocation.

Stubbs was in no doubt about what the afternoon meant.

"Great performance from the Sunday 5s. U14 and U15 juniors accounting for nearly all the runs, then taking most of the wickets. We start the league season next weekend on a high."

A captain who knew what he had. A group of young players who proved him right. The Sunday 5s head into the league campaign with momentum, confidence, and a generation of talent that is only going to grow.

Next weekend can't come soon enough. 🏏

Pyus Anand - Captain of the third XI V Marple

"Great Intent" | Pyush Anand on a Narrow Defeat to Marple

One run. In cricket, as in life, margins don't come much finer than that.

Urmston CC's 3rd XI faced Marple on a pitch that made batting first a genuine challenge. Working their way to 119 on a tricky surface was hard-earned, and captain Pyush Anand knew what the target would demand from his bowlers.

"We knew only taking wickets would win us the match," he said. The field was set aggressively from the first over, the intent clear. Marple would not be allowed to coast.

And for long stretches, they weren't. But three wickets was ultimately all Urmston could take, and Marple reached their target of 120 for the loss of three, finishing 120/3 to win by 7 wickets.

Anand was measured in defeat, but proud of how his side had carried themselves.

"It was a tricky pitch to bat on first. 120 was not enough, but the boys showed great intent to make it difficult for Marple all the way through."

A one-run game that went the other way. It happens. What matters is the character shown in pursuit of a result that stayed just out of reach.

The 3s will dust themselves down. They always do. 🏏

Duncan Hood - Captain of the second XI V Warrington

"We Bounced Back" | Duncan Hood on a Tough Afternoon for the 2s

Duncan Hood doesn't dress things up. He never does. And after Urmston CC's 2nd XI fell to 30 for 4 against Warrington, there was a moment when it looked like it could get very difficult indeed.

It didn't. The side regrouped, fought their way to 108, and made Warrington work hard in the chase. The visitors got there, finishing 109/5 to win by 5 wickets, but not before Urmston had made them earn every run.

Hood was candid about the areas that need attention. Fielding, he said, is where the bulk of improvement must come, and he was clear-eyed about its importance.

"We still need to make a lot of improvements in our fielding and understand that this is the vast majority of the game's activity."

It's the kind of honest assessment that marks out a captain who knows his side and isn't prepared to settle for almost good enough.

But amid the self-criticism, there was genuine enthusiasm about one player in particular. Stan has been catching the eye, and Hood is already thinking about what comes next for him.

"We are very impressed with Stan. He continues to stand out, and I'm sure he will turn his 20s and 30s into 60s and 70s."

A defeat, but a recoverable one.

The 2s showed enough on Saturday to know what they're capable of. Now they go and prove it. 🏏

James Basford - Captain of the First XI V Sale

"That's When It Counts the Most" | James Bashford on a Tough Day Against Sale

James Bashford has never been one to hide from a difficult truth. And after Urmston CC's 1st XI were beaten by 9 wickets against Sale CC, there were a few worth confronting.

Urmston batted first and posted 173 all out. It wasn't quite enough. Sale's reply was swift and largely comfortable, their opening batsman stroking his way to a century with a fluency that left Urmston's attack without a convincing answer. The visitors reached their target at 177/1, losing just one wicket in the process.

There was a bright spot worth noting. Umar Munawar got off the mark for the season with an innings of 40+, and the captain was quick to acknowledge it.

"Good to see Umar Munawar off the mark with a decent innings. He will be a key player for us this season."

But beyond that, Bashford was honest about what the afternoon exposed. The fielding and bowling both need work, and the captain's focus now turns to something deeper than individual performances.

"Feels like we need to focus on gelling as a team and raising our energy and effort levels in the field. It's always difficult when you're behind the game, but that's when it counts the most."

It's a challenge that cuts to the heart of what Bashford has been building since taking the captaincy. A team that holds together under pressure, that lifts rather than drops when the game gets hard. Against Sale, that test came early.

The response will define the weeks ahead. 🏏
